Review: Cruel Crown by Victoria Aveyard

Title: Cruel Crown (Red Queen #0.1 – 0.2)
Author: Victoria Aveyard
Published: January 5th 2016
Date Read: February 17th - 18th 2016
Read In: English

Two Women on either Side of the Silver and Red divide tell the Stories no one else knows.

Queen Song
Queen Coriane, first wife of King Tiberias, keeps a secret diary – how else can she ensure that no one at the palace will use her thoughts against her? Coriane recounts her heady courtship with the crown prince, the birth of a new prince, Cal, and the potentially deadly challenges that lie ahead for her in royal life.

Steel Scars
Captain Farley was raised to be strong, but being tasked with planting the seeds of rebellion in Norta is a tougher job than expected. As she travels the land recruiting black market traders, smugglers, and extremists for her first attempt at an attack on the capital, she stumbles upon a connection that may prove to be the key to the entire operation – Mare Barrow.

Queen Song was a really great story, i'd give it 5 stars. Queen Coriane is Cal's mother, who we've already met in Red Queen. The story is about her life, starting with Coriane being just a child. She's not rich, and when she meets Tiberias, they fall in love. But even after that she had to fight for herself, being blamed of bewitching her husband into being in love with her. She really wants to have a child, but she suffers from several aborts until she finally gives birth to Cal. But even then she can't be happy.

Steel Scars was a nice little story about Captain Farley, who i've really liked. But i'd give this story probably only 3 or 4 stars, because all that stuff about being a fighter doesn't quite do it for me. But for people who are into this, it's a great story.

Review: A Mad Zombie Party by Gena Showalter

Title: A Mad Zombie Party (White Rabbit Chronicles #4)
Author: Gena Showalter
Published: September 29th 2015
Date Read: February 14th - 17th 2016
Read In: English

The enemy has risen from the grave.
Together we slayers must stand
or one by one we will fall.

Ali Bell's crew of zombie slayers thought they'd won the war against Anima Industries, the evil company responsible for capturing and experimenting on zombies in an effort to discover the secret to immortality. In the last epic clash, the slayers lost many of their crew and closest friends. But Frosty, the ice man himself, has not recovered from one casualty in particular – the love of his life, Kat Parker.

On the path to self-annihilation, Frosty receives a message from beyond – Kat's spirit returns, insisting he partner with rogue slayer Camilla Marks. Frosty will do anything for Kat. Except that. Camilla's betrayal caused Kat's death.

But when Anima rises from the grave stronger than ever, Frosty, Camilla and all the slayers will have to work together to survive. And one broken slayer will learn that sometimes the line between hate and attraction is blurred... and the road to redemption may mean letting go of the past and grabbing hold of the future.

This book is not written in Ali's point of view, it switches between Frosty and Camilla. It starts some time after The Queen of Zombie Hearts, where Frosty's girlfriend Kat died. Frosty is heartbroken and split himself from his friends. But Kat is a witness now and Ali had a vision about Frosty, where he is saved by Camilla. So the girls and their friends try to get Camilla being Frosty's bodyguard, so he does not die. But Camilla is kind of responsible for Kat's death, so Frosty does not like her.

In the beginning it was kind of different to read, because Frosty and Camilla both are very different from Ali. While reading parts where Ali was there, i always thought she seemed different herself from the other books, more mature and less a crybaby. Camilla was in the previous book so stupid i really did not like her, but in this book she actually grew on me. This book was a nice addition to the series, but i'm still not sure if it was necessary. Anima comes back even though the destroyed it in The Queen of Zombie Hearts, so they have to destroy it again.
Oh, and it has an epilogue, where different characters tell you from their future how everything turned out, so i guess this really will be the last book...?

Review: The Queen of Zombie Hearts by Gena Showalter

Title: The Queen of Zombie Hearts (White Rabbit Chronicles #3)
Author: Gena Showalter
Published: September 30th 2014
Date Read: February 8th - 13th 2016
Read In: English

I thought I had nothing left to give.
I thought wrong.
They started the war.
Now I will end it.

Alice "Ali" Bell thinks the worst is behind her. She's ready to take the next step with boyfriend Cole Holland, the leader of the zombie slayers... until Anima Industries, the agency controlling the zombies, launches a sneak attack, killing four of her friends. It's then she realizes that humans can be more dangerous than monsters... and the worst has only begun.

As secrets that may tear Ali and Cole apart come to light, and more slayers are taken or killed, Ali will fight harder than ever to bring down Anima – even sacrificing her own life for those she loves.

Another Alice in Wonderland. No, actually it's not. I know the first book is called Alice in Zombieland and when you don't know what it's about, you probably think it's some Alice falling down the rabbit hole and suddenly there are Zombies in Wonderland. But it's not, so don't be disappointed when you start this series.
Yes, i admit it: I thought the same when i stumpled upon this series. But before i started reading the first one, i've already heard it's not what everyone thought it was. So i wasn't disappointed and i simply gave it a chance.
Sometimes i was annoyed by some characters, especially Kat, because they were kinda naive. But they are teenagers, so i guess it was ok.
The Queen of Zombie Hearts is the third book in this series and was supposed to be the last one, but now it's not, because Gena Showalter decided to write another one. Well, this one was like a big showdown for the series, the slayers fighting against their enemy. I did like it, it was easy to read and it really felt like the end of a series.

Review: Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

Title: Career of Evil
Author: Robert Galbraith / J.K. Rowling
Published: October 22nd 2015
Date Read: January 16th - 27th 2016
Read In: English

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible – and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.

With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them...

A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, Career of Evil is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. You will not be able to put this book down.

I'm sure many of us wouldn't have read any books by Robert Galbraith, if it wasn't public it's J.K. Rowling writing those books. I might have one day, since i'm kinda into thrillers.

I've read The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm before, so it was a sure thing i would read Career of Evil too. I've like the other two books and i liked this one. It's not bloody or gory, since most of the book you follow Strike or Robin. I know lots of people think it's a lot of blah blah and the story doesn't do much for its ending, but believe me, it would be more uninteresting if there was no story at all, just murder and its end. I think the problem of those people who don't like Robert Galbraith's books is, that they're fans of Harry Potter and haven't read any other thrillers before and simply don't like it.

J.K. Rowling always manages it to reveal nothing about the murderer, at least not for me. I didn't know who did it until the very end. Strike always knows a lot earlier than the reader, but Rowling just doesn't share.

January Book Haul.

This month i didn't buy too many books. I have a huge pile of unread books, so i guess it isn't too bad i didn't buy more than two

 Golden Son by Pierce Brown
 Spelled by Betsy Schow

I've already read Red Rising by Pierce Brown, so of course i had to buy the second book
And i've found Spelled on Goodreads and of course its pretty cover made me buy it, i hope it's good!
